COVID-19 Information

Good To Go emblemOn Monday 14th September, the Scottish Government introduced a new gathering limit of six people from two households either indoors or outdoors.  As this new ruling applies to our walking tours this means that no single booking can be taken for more than 6 people (max of 2 households). Children under 12 from within the two households will not be counted in the new limit of six people.

We will continue to offer a public outdoor walking tour at 7:00pm on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with a limited headcount to permit physical distancing.

Our wee shop remains open Wednesday-Sunday, 12noon - 6pm, with appropriate physical distancing and sanitary safeguards in place.

See the relevant sections on our homepage, and our Tour Booking page, for full details.

These measures remain compatible with the additional local restrictions announced by the Scottish Government on 7th October, and tours will proceed as planned.

Our Public Tours

The Ghosts & Gore Tour

A gentle stroll through the Old Town, with guide Alexander Clapperton (deceased) joined by a number of quirky local phantoms who'll tell you hair-raising tales of plague, punishment and persecution.

  • Available: Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Start time: 7pm.
  • Duration: 80 minutes approx.
  • Best choice for: A shorter walk but longer stories, getting into extra depth, and the ghosts playing a bigger role in the performance.

The Greyfriars Cemetery Tour

A walking tour of Greyfriars cemetery.

Visit the graves of some of the lesser-known characters buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, including the lecturer who taught Charles Darwin, the actor buried in full theatrical costume, and the First World War ace pilot.

Did you know Greyfriars cemetery has links to golf, the moon ... and turnips? Who was the mysterious Miss Cathcart? Who was the man who fought a duel in London's Hyde Park? Where is the bestselling novelist from the 1770s buried? Although not our main focus, we will also point out the graves with links to Harry Potter on this fascinating walk around Greyfriars cemetery.

  • Available: Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Start time: 2pm.
  • Duration: 90 minutes approx.
  • Best choice for: Adults and older children wanting a focus on the history, and less hi-jinks. (Probably still the occasional bad joke.)
  • Note: This tour is with main guide only. If you are looking for a tour with a main guide and 'jumper ooter', we recommend the Witchery Ghosts & Gore Tour.

The Murder & Mystery Tour

Our original Edinburgh ghost tour. Join reformed highway-robber Adam Lyal (deceased) for a brisk stravaig up and down the dark corners of the Old Town and its grisly history.

Currently unavailable due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Unfortunately, we are currently unable to offer the Murder & Mystery Tour in a manner that guarantees adequate physical distancing.

Private Tours

If you are unable to make one of our public tour slots, or are looking for a more bespoke arrangement in any way, we also offer the Ghosts & Gore Tour and Greyfriars Cemetery Tour for private booking, at a time to suit your party.

Prices start from £75.00. Please contact us if you would like to rent a ghost.

COVID-19 Information

In order to maintain appropriate physical distancing as our tours thread through the Old Town's closes, these tours will initially be limited to a maximum capacity of 15 persons.

In line with Scottish Government regulations effective from 14 September 2020, we are limiting the number of adults that can be booked in a single party to 6 adults only. Children under 12 years of age do not count towards this limit; however, please note this is not the same as "children" in our pricing, which is under 16 years. In addition, we ask guests to observe the rule that a party joining us can comprise no more than 2 households.

Due to these restrictions, we are currently running our public tours only on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

If you are looking for something bespoke or outwith this schedule, please do contact us or phone 0131 225 6745 (Wednesday-Sunday) and we will see if something special can be arranged.

Where to meet your tour

USUALLY: The Witchery restaurant

Our tours usually meet outside The Witchery By The Castle restaurant at 352 Castlehill (the top of The Royal Mile).

SOMETIMES: The Cadies & Witchery Tours shop

Sometimes we're unable to meet outside The Witchery due to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo (Monday-Saturday for about 3 weeks in August) or concerts held on the Castlehill in June/July. On these evenings, tours will meet at our wee shop at 84 West Bow (Victoria Street). It's just a couple of minutes' walk from The Witchery.

Please check your booking confirmation for the correct location for your tour. if in doubt, contact us.

How to get here (and back)

Both meeting-points are within easy walking-distance of numerous public transport options. If coming by train, Waverley station is 10-15 minutes' walk away. A similar distance away is Princes Street, with buses to all parts of the city, and trams to the West End and airport.

If coming by car, please note that on-street parking is limited in the Old Town, and in addition there may be parking restrictions or even road closures in some streets during the Edinburgh Festival and at various other times. There is an NCP car park on Castle Terrace, about 10 minutes' walk from both meeting-points.
